Have A Beer
Sitting in a coffee shop my big ears tune in to every conversation
one table at a time A macho man who's Mexican struts by his hair wild curls A frilly oxymoron, a dead man's
flag unfurled
Well, just have a beer ,but don't you drive or the cops they'll haul you in And the caffeine addict speeds to work and the smoker's well they've all sinned We talk on incessantly 'bout
the injustice of it all But then we buy our beamers, chat on e-mail and hold our anger in (buy our beamers, fax
each other -2nd time) (buy our beamers, curse our beepers--3rd time)
Complaining with a thick accent 'bout
her unruly children She sips her Chai tea latte, says I sure could use a friend The public schools are such a mess,
my kid's dropped out again I can't afford my taxes and my mother's movin' in
Well, have two
beers...
Sitting in a coffee shop alone with book and pen, I'm writing conversations that I can listen in Every life is history, worth remembering Some is sad and some is bad, but most is full of fun
Their giggling
dumbfounds me as they watch me turn around poetic gestures dazzle me without making a sound I'm wondering if
what they say is as happy as their hands Their joyful faces coincide, I think I understand

Dove Springs Girl
I am a Dove Springs girl and I live in the shadow of the red rock of Spiderwoman In the Navajo Nation, In the Navajo Nation I am
a Dineh girl and I fight to stay on the land of our ancestors We are called the resistors,
we are called the resistors I am the last of my people and
I work to bring the elders back home to plant and grow the corn, to plant and grow the corn So many years of uranium pollution and we thrive despite the dirty corporate coal
mines Shame to Senator McCain, Shame to Senator McCain I study hard at the white man's school but I still learn the ways of the Dineh people and I know that beauty is the way, yes I know we'll be sovereign one day Bad roads, bad laws, no electric and no water is running and the sacred space of the Sundance desecrated In
the Navajo Nation, In the Navajo nation
I am a Dove Springs girl and the great-granddaughter of the Chief Barboncito who said don't ask me to go anywhere but my home anywhere but my home

Tree of Life Misconceptions, bad perceptions, wrong intentions keep tearing us apart Grand receptions, genuflections, false redemptions, we’re
lying to our hearts How can we ever be free if the truth just
cannot be perceived How can
we ever have peace if we hold on to just what we believe Strong
opinions, old convictions, blind traditions keep holding us apart Harsh reaction, fear of adaptation, emotional retraction leaves fire in our hearts Repeat chorus Forget
about what’s wrong, forget about what’s right Forget about the hurt, forget about the fight Think about why you cannot hear my cry You’ve got to compromise and open up your mind Commonality, not your reality, is the way we ought to see and put an end to hate Human qualities ain’t what it ought
to be, open your eyes and see and come to the tree of life Hold
my hand with me, stand beneath the tree, let’s spread our branches free and touch humanity Reach those who cannot see, help those who are in need,
teach love and dignity to our human family La la la

A Prayer for Morales
You say an eye for an eye for a capital crime You say revenge is
a virtue two wrongs make a right
Violence can never bring peace to the victims of crime Violence can never
be justice to those doin' time
Civilized nations say no to barbaric reaction Civilized nations condemn
acts of vile attraction
Hate never heals, hate never heals Heed the words of Jesus, Gandhi, Dr. King, , Mumia,
your mama, the Dalai Lama, the Quakers, peacemakers
Welcome to the new slavery, one in three black men not free Locked up 'cause he speaks his mind, 'cause the jury's blind, the judge is hired, the lawyer's tired, the
systems down, the man is brown, the court won't hear, politicians fear, cause it ain't my problem 'cause the bible
says, it's the way it is. 'cause his life don't matter
We light the candles pray hold a vigil tonight So helpless we feel when the announcement is made that you died
